Employee engagement

Good communication is essential for a successful workplace. We constantly engage with employees to keep them up to date about the business and what is happing at ITV, and to enable them to share their ideas and concerns.

The Watercooler

Our company intranet site, The Watercooler, provides employees with regularly-updated information about the company, our policies, programmes, and corporate responsibility initiatives. It is also one of the ways in which we source employee feedback.

For example, we asked people to submit their ideas for ways to help local communities, and used their responses when revising our volunteering programme. To coincide with the programme’s relaunch in July 2009, we ran a week-long Watercooler campaign featuring volunteering case studies and interviews with previous participants to encourage people to sign up.

The Watercooler also focuses on ITV’s employee diversity initiatives. For example, in 2009 we ran a story highlighting the availability of new software that makes it easier for employees with dyslexia to write emails.

Employee surveys

We conduct an annual survey of all ITV employees, to obtain a picture of the extent to which they are proud to work for ITV and speak highly about our products and services. In 2009, 65% of employees took part in the survey, slightly less than last year. We are working on ways to increase employee engagement through the surveys in 2010.

Direct engagement

Work to increase direct engagement with colleagues has continued across various channels of communication including face-to-face meetings between employees and executives.

Regular communication channels

  • Lunches hosted by Senior Executives
  • Monthly management cascade to deliver information across the company
  • Monthly leadership breakfasts for senior management to meet and discuss pertinent issues, before passing information on to their teams
  • Video interviews with senior managers posted on The Watercooler
  • Poster campaigns to raise awareness of company wide campaigns
  • Communications groups that bring together employee representatives from across the country to provide us with feedback they have gathered from their colleagues.

All employees also have the opportunity for an annual performance development review with their line manager.
