ITV announces ambitious new environmental targets as part of new Social Purpose strategy

We’ve been working hard over the past year developing a new Social Purpose strategy for ITV and identifying ambitious targets to drive meaningful change, which we’re publishing today in our latest Social Purpose report. With the massive reach of our platforms, much-loved shows and creative talent we have an ability to shape culture for good - and we have identified four priorities where we want to make significant difference, externally through our programmes and internally through our actions at ITV. These are: championing better mental and physical health for all; fostering creativity by embracing diversity; reducing our impact on the environment; and giving back.

Within our third priority area, environment, our targets cover the issues most material to our business –reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and waste, sourcing responsibly and developing a sustainable culture at ITV. These are supported by our focus on promoting sustainable behaviours on screen. Within each area, our flagship targets are:

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions - setting a 1.5 degree science based target for our business, becoming carbon neutral, powering our business with renewable energy
  • Waste - becoming a zero waste business by avoiding, reducing, recycling waste and committing to zero single use plastic in our operations, productions and supply chain
  • Sourcing – collaborating with all our suppliers to deliver a sustainable value chain
  • Sustainable culture – training all our colleagues and freelancers in environmental awareness and ensuring 100% of the programmes we produce and commission are albert certified

We’ve set the ambition of our targets, and are now working on the plan of action and milestones to deliver against them. We will be publishing these roadmaps next year.

We are excited about the opportunity to future proof ITV for years to come, by working with our colleagues, industry peers, experts and partners to reduce our collective impact and encourage sustainable behaviours both on and off screen.
