Climate Action

Brand new documentary, ‘Dancing on Thin Ice with Torvill & Dean’, was a highlight of ITV’s festive schedule and debuted on ITV on the 1st January 2021.
Produced by Wingspan Productions, the 90 minute film followed Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean as they travelled to Alaska on an extraordinary quest to fulfil a life-long dream, that also provided a first-hand insight into the effects of climate change.
The Olympic champions have spent a remarkable 45 years on the ice together – but astonishingly they’ve never skated in the great outdoors. Jayne and Chris recalled how as children they were inspired by a mural in Nottingham ice rink showing skaters on a frozen mountain lake. Ever since, they’ve wanted to skate free in nature, rather than round in circles on artificial ice. So they go to Alaska to make that dream come true.
But luck is against them – in Alaska’s hottest year on record there is not a lot of ice to be found.
So Jayne and Chris’s travels into the remote wilderness become a hunt for wild ice, skating wherever they can.
Urging everyone to play their part in reducing carbon emissions, at the end of the show Jayne and Christopher invited viewers to measure and reduce their own carbon footprint at itv.com/footprint. The website contains tips on reducing your impact on the environment and points audiences to WWF’s carbon calculator tool.
We came here thinking it was going to be a hard task, but it’s turned into quite a dramatic task to try to get some ice to skate on. It makes you want to bring your children here to look at it and experience it for real.
Jayne Torvill
I’m really looking forward to it, I think it will be exhilarating but at the same time there’s a tinge of sadness that, potentially, it’s not something that’s going to be there for other people in the future.
